War Intensifies in Afghanistan

Dear Patriotic American,

We're expecting to receive a flood of requests for financial help this summer as the war in Afghanistan heats up. Thousands of new troops have already been sent over with more on the way. That means the wounded are coming back right now, and many more will be soon returning home burned, blinded, or with other disabling injuries. We need to be ready to help these brave men and women. Will you please help by contributing to the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes Afghanistan Surge Emergency Aid Drive We don't want to have to turn even one wounded hero down who makes an urgent call asking for help. 

As you may have heard, the situation in Afghanistan has gone from bad to worse.
Just this past May, the United States lost its 1,000th troop or service member in battle.

According to icasualties.org, 2009 was formerly the deadliest year yet in the 9-year-old battle – we lost 317 brave young heroes. 2010 has now become the deadliest year - with over 400 lives lost already.

And for every death suffered in Afghanistan, many more are severely wounded.
Regardless if you agree with the war, all across America, young men and women who went to the other side of the world to fight for our freedom are returning home with missing arms and legs, blindness, severe burns, crippling mental illness and other disabilities.

So far, over 5,725 have been classified as wounded in battle. This number is increasing every month and will rise dramatically over the summer…
…Especially as American troops are being sent in for the largest offensive since the war began.

Tens of thousands of our troops will be involved in the fighting to secure Kandahar.
Unfortunately, many lives will be lost and even more will be severely wounded.

You may not be aware of this, but when wounded heroes return home, they do not immediately receive disability payments from the government.
It often takes 6 months before a wounded soldier begins receiving disability checks. If there are any complications, it can take about a year or more.
During this time, the wounded hero still has to provide for himself and his family. But because of his injuries, he can’t. In many cases, the wounded hero is never able to work again.

My name is Major General John Singlaub. I parachuted into Nazi-occupied France during WWII to prepare French Resistance fighters for the Allied invasion, trained Chinese guerrillas for operations against the Japanese, ran covert operations against the North Koreans and the Chinese, and commanded all U.S. Special Operations Forces in Southeast Asia.

Now I’m working with the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, an excellent nonprofit organization that provides emergency aid to our troops who have been severely wounded in Afghanistan or Iraq.

While the news coverage has declined, the war in Afghanistan is worse than it’s ever been.

Already Kandahar is the second most deadly province in Afghanistan for American troops. And that’s before the summer offensive begins in Kandahar.
The summer offensive will most likely last 2 to 3 months. It will be hot, brutal and intense.

Many soldiers will die. Even more will suffer unimaginable injuries that will permanently change their lives.

In a country as great as America, there is no excuse for a soldier to return home from war and not be properly cared for.
